Tax burden shift hits big industry in Ohio counties
Lorain County Auditor Julian Pijor outlined the effects of House Bill 50 shifting tax burden from homeowners to business. Homeowners in Lorain County save modest amounts while commercial rates rise sharply, notably in Lorain and Elyria. Major increases affect U S Steel in Lorain, CEI properties in Avon Lake, and a local Elyria manufacturer, with potential retroactive refunds if the Ohio Supreme Court finds the law unconstitutional.

Olmsted Eyes Deep Cuts If Levy Fails in March
NORTH OLMSTED officials warned that a failed 7 mill permanent operating levy could trigger layoffs of more than 100 employees and the elimination of all extracurriculars including varsity sports and National Honor Society. Building doors would close after classes, and activities would be barred from school property to meet a projected 1982 deficit of about 1.5 million. If the levy passes, 2 million dollars annually would avert much of the cuts, with some positions saved. otherwise, staffing would shrink by 64 teachers and 51 non certified staff, busing would extend to two miles, elementary summer school would end, and maintenance funding would be slashed. The district proposed borrowing against new taxes to ride through the year.
