15 Year Old Builds Private Observatory in Backyard

A 15-year-old high school sophomore and astronomy enthusiast, Charles Reid Michael, funds a private observatory costing about $100,000 in his family's yard. His father Walter J. Michael, head of the Ohio Locomotive Crane Co., is building it for Charles who plans to finish in January. The round-domed observatory will rival Ohio Wesleyan's Perkins Observatory in size, though housing a 12 inch telescope from a German lens maker, with a substantial astronomy library. Charles has no formal instruction but has studied deeply and once traveled over a thousand miles for a July 4 eclipse to use his current three inch telescope. He aims to study medicine and become a surgeon.

Relics Turn Up As Falls Is Renovated

Niagara Falls relics emerge during a U S Army Corps of Engineers project to lift the falls area. Workers uncovered a beer barrel an axle and a cap and ball musket above Horseshoe Falls as a 17.5 million remedial effort dried the river. Historian Marvin A Rapp believes the barrel and axle are about a century old while the musket with a crown bayonet could date to 1796 when British forces abandoned Fort Niagara.
