President Truman proposes a ten year program to build ten million dwellings and extend rent controls until April 1949. He urges Congress funding for 100000 low rent public housing units annually for five years and calls for cost reductions, updated codes, and materials allocation to spur construction while safeguarding against inflation.
Rev. Oscar T Olson of Epworth-Methodist Church Cleveland challenged the Second Sunday Lenten service crowd to make the church bold in world affairs. He warned foundations of the world have fallen apart in a decade and urged the church to lead unity and self mastery despite unrest and racial tensions. He cautioned against retreat like Germany under Hitler and urged decisive church action.
President Truman, aboard the USS Williamsburg, left St. Thomas Virgin Islands and started a two day Caribbean cruise. The voyage will visit St Croix and reach the Guantanamo Bay Cuba area by Wednesday night per the royal schedule. The trip follows his Sunday speech marking the 100th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Danish islands.
Elyria High School students will view two programs titled Previews of Progress in the school auditorium on Wednesday. Principal J D Severs reports the event showcases physics and other science developments in a stave demonstration. The program proceeds courtesy of the General Motors Corporation.

In Jerusalem early Sunday an earthquake like blast killed 42 and injured 97, with Jewish fighters retaliating by killing 10 Britons. Debris blocked streets as thousands of workers searched, several hotels and offices collapsed, and vast damage spread across a half mile radius.
A six car ski train carrying 349 passengers derailed on steep downhill grade near Waedenswil and crashed into a three story building. At least 20 were killed and 80 hurt as brakes allegedly failed and investigators probe Swiss railway safety.
Eugene Moller of Valley View was treated at Elyria Memorial Hospital at 3:30 a.m. for a leg laceration after his motorcycle left the road and struck a ditch near 513 Gulf Road. A second item notes Rodney Lang of 915 East Avenue reported damage to the rear of his Route 10 east collision car when struck by Louis Elkton of Chrivelard, who stopped for traffic. Police bullets and a theater ad follow.
Mrs Maude E Jenkins 64 longtime Avon resident was killed instantly when struck by a car driven by George Brass Jr of Lorain while walking along Route 2354 near her home. Coroner notes fractures to skull neck legs and chest. Funeral at Avon Baptist church Tuesday 2 30 p m with Rev Robert Ibach. Survivors include brothers Harry and Ira Gough and sisters Mary Grace Irene Gough.
Funeral services were held in Westlake for Ray S. Osborn of 112 Moorland Drive Avon Lake after he was found dead Saturday in an upstairs room while apparently nailing fiberboard to the ceiling. Osborn, a longtime exposition floor manager, had lived alone since his wife Sally died two months earlier. Surviving siblings include Leverett Osborn of San Francisco and Russell Osborn of Hudson and sisters Mrs. Florence Stewart and Mrs. Alice Pease. Burial was at Evergreen Cemetery Westlake.
Chicago police planned release of Delbert Shinn 36 from Chicago after he admitted he tampered with slot machines at a Moose lodge in Celina Ohio and eluded jackpots by lifting the mechanism with wire. Police said the act was not a crime under their local law at the time.
Five persons sustained injuries in two separate accidents reported by state patrol. In the first crash a car driven by Brendon Lieb collided with a car driven by Walter Rust. Rust received head injuries and was treated at Amherst Hospital. Brendon Lieb and Tease Lieb were involved, with injuries noted. A second incident details unclear notes continued on page 2.
The weather system drenched the South Atlantic States with heavy rain and dumped snow on the Northern Rockies. New York City reported 57.1 inches for the season after a six inch snowfall. Greenwood Mississippi saw river flooding risk as Yazoo rose five feet above its banks. Springlike warmth briefly returned to the Midwest before colder air from Canada was expected to arrive tomorrow.
About 179 priests and hundreds of relatives gathered for a Pontifical Requiem Mass in St Marys Church Oberlin for the late Rev. William C O Loughlin former pastor of Sacred Heart Church Oberlin who died in Cleveland after a long illness. The service followed memorial rites at Sacred Heart Oberlin with Bishop Begin of Cleveland presiding and a sermon by Rt Rev William Newton praising his zeal and devotion despite chronic health issues.
The condition of 96 year old Judge A. R. Webber who was admitted to Elshna Memories Hospital Tuesday for care of a cold is reported improved. His doctor ordered the admission to hasten recovery and expects further improvement soon.
Four prominent Americans including Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt urged the UN Security Council to form an international army for Palestine without delay. They asked lifting the U S arms embargo, and sanctions against Arabs, warning world confidence would fall if partition is blocked. The statement called for UN army deployment by May 15 or sooner if requested.
A landslide near a hilltop mine operation continues to shift, closing more than 150 yards of highway and forcing one-way traffic. State and federal officials will study if the mine operation contributed to the slide as crews repair damaged road sections. The area drew thousands of visitors yesterday causing heavy traffic in both directions.

Elyria High School announced winners of the 147 48 American Legion essay contest. Senior Jim Couture won the $5 grand prize for the essay on United Nations effectiveness, with 24 winners across four classes receiving prizes totaling $50.
