Secretary of Treasury Mills told the Ways and Means committee a broad manufacturers sales tax at two percent could yield about 600 million dollars. He said the levy should be temporary to meet the present emergency.
Ohio Governor White said he would decide in the next days whether to call an extraordinary session of the General Assembly to enact relief measures. He plans a conference with the joint taxation committee to secure support, saying a prepared program awaits approval and cabinet discussions will follow.
Two bandits entered the Har Le Wel Inn on Oberlin road around 7 P M yesterday. They took about six dollars from the cash register and two slot machines before fleeing in a large car. Julius Krebs, the manager, was alone in the inn. one robber leveled a revolver at him while the other robbed the cash drawer and removed slot machines. Krebs reported the incident to the sheriff's department.
More than five thousand Texans gathered in San Antonio for a Garner campaign rally. The crowd featured a parade and speeches as supporters adopted the slogan Garner for us and Garner boom. Dr Stockton Axson spoke, urging a politician in the White House.
The monoplane Lone Star from Old Orchard Maine to Buenos Aires landed at Boston area airport after a hard landing. Pilot Nate Browne and co pilot Edward Muldowner were shaken but uninjured as motor trouble forced the touch down. the craft was christened Lone Star in Browne's honor.
Comptroller John W. Pole announced a centralized operation in New York to market national bank bonds held by receivers. The plan targets preventing promiscuous dumping and excludes local issues from the offerings.
Adolph Hitler may receive German citizenship today to run for president, with appointment rumored at Brunswick Technical Academy. He would challenge President Paul von Hindenburg, a national idol, amid his rise in the Nazi movement.
Forest O Brine the endurance flyer was reportedly kidnapped outside the Fairgrounds Hotel in St Louis by a woman believed to be named Bartlett. His wife Mrs. O Brine told police the story was false and that only one person occupied a car. Detectives pursued whether the abduction claimed was by jealous or criminal captors while noting O Brine’s past endurance flights and records.
Rex the dog owned by Ralph Hitchman of Wheeling West Virginia regained hearing after a flight with Captain J W Hunt of Moundsville. The plane climbed to 10000 feet and performed loops and dives before Rex heard again after four years deafness.
Washington reports the Congressional probe into defects of the Akron airship closed inconclusively as Rep McClintic Oklahoma chair said no report would be written. He warned the ship may be permanently damaged and noted Shenandoah’s fatal crash followed a minor incident.
The Akron airship at Lakehurst suffered damage from a gust, crippling the rudder and stern. Captain Shoemaker says repairs will take six weeks with parts from Lakehurst and Akron. Congressmen awaiting ride for inquiry into air worthiness paused their plan. Representative McClintic calls it a miracle no major injuries occurred.
Former State Senator George H. Bender of Cleveland announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for congressman at large. He made the statement in Columbus on February 23.
Robert Short, an American attached to a Chinese squadron, died when his plane was shot down by three Japanese scouts over Soochow during a two and a half minute air engagement in which he fought others. Pilot Susumu Kotani credited with the victory.
Washington Feb. 23 The death of Robert Short an American aviator attached to Chinese fighting forces will not involve the United States Government in international complications. A citizen who voluntarily joins the fighting forces of another nation does so at his own risk and forfeits protection by this Government. Short's plane was shot down by Japanese.
Julia V. Billings 91 daughter of Belden's first settlers, born in a log cabin, died at her daughter Mrs A P LaGron’s home in Lorain. Survived by daughter Mrs LaGron of Lorain and son Fred A Billings of Cleveland. Funeral Wednesday at 200 from 436 Washington Ave Lorain burial Ridgelawn Cemetery Ulria.
The Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved the nomination of Benjamin N. Cardozo of New York to be Associate Justice of the U S Supreme Court in place of Oliver Wendell Holmes. The committee took the action without discussion and will report it to the Senate later. The Senate likely will confirm at its near executive session.

TOKIO Feb 25 The Japanese cabinet discussed sending reinforcements to Shanghai to bolster the current force and accelerate the offensive on the Shanghai Weosung front. Reports say Chiang Kai shek's aid to the 19th route defense influenced the push for more troops.
Shanghai dispatch reports Japanese forces near Tazang suspended the line assault pending reinforcements from Tokio. Chinese troops reinforced front lines at Tazang and Kiangwan and harassed Japanese advances despite heavy artillery and aerial bombings.
Captain Charles H. Mohr of Lakewood will receive a Congressional medal for valor after rescuing mariners on the Great Lakes over the past decade. In his latest act he saved seven lives from an aging schooner driven by a storm, with a 73 year old master and six crew members aboard as the vessel sank.
Sir John Simon states Britain's aim to work with the United States and the League of Nations on agreed actions in the Far East. He mentions possible economic measures and emphasizes affirming League principles as key to resolving the Sino Japanese dispute. A special jury pool for the Michael Benzak murder case was formed as seven jurors were seated at noon. Benzak faces possible death sentence if witnesses prove guilt for the November 19 shooting of his alleged sweetheart on the Durkee road. The defense and state, led by Prosecutor Don W. Myers, will decide peremptory dismissals later.
George Prugh aged 34 of Plain City Ohio died in Columbus from a fractured skull after an automobile crash on State Road 161 near Kileville.
A religious conference led by Rev. Frederick L. Fagley of New York and Rev. Edward W. Cross of Richmond Hill, N Y, was attended today by Congregational and Christian church pastors from Central and Northern Ohio.
