Transportation Secretary Drew Lewis signaled government support for an auto industry rehabilitation package, but urged wage restraint and price discipline. He noted import limits could be part of the plan, with automakers possibly required to accept concessions and invest American capital.
Gulf Oil Corp and Sun Co announced regional price hikes on heating oil, kerosene, and wholesale gasoline, adding a few cents per gallon. Sohio lifted gasoline by 1 to 2 cents in the Midwest and East Coast, with broader industry projections of a total rise around 23 cents per gallon this year.
Cuban commandos struck the Ecuadoran Embassy in Havana at 1 56 a m capturing 31 Cuban dissidents who had held the ambassador and other hostages for a week. Tear gas and rapid action paralyzed the intruders with no bloodshed reported as leader Romulo Juan Delgado Fernandez was detained and taken to a provincial prison. Ecuador authorized the action and pledged no death sentences would be imposed.
Fog has shrouded the area for three days with over an inch of rain in two days. Despite limited visibility no major traffic accidents were reported though flight schedules were briefly delayed at Hopkins International Airport in Cleveland. Sunshine is expected to reduce the condensation later today.
Tonight remain mostly clear with patchy fog possible and a low in the mid 30s. Sunday partly cloudy with a chance of showers and highs in the low to mid 50s. U S officials including the Postal Inspection Service and Lorain Police press Williams, a one man operation advertising up to $5000 mail order loans with no collateral, to discontinue Financial Service. Williams agreed to sign a voluntary discontinuance but wavered then agreed to comply. The BBB reports refunds due to others who paid upfront.
