Top drug enforcer opposes ex aide on marijuana legalization

Washington AP The head of the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs says he opposes former aide John Finlator’s push for marijuana decriminalization. Ingersoll warns legalization would tacitly condone drug abuse while noting Finlator’s stance has unsettled many in the agency and questions his motives.

Car explodes near Belfast four killed in blast

A car blast outside Belfast killed four men believed linked to the Irish Republican Army as police examine a premature bomb explosion. Two revolvers were found. the blast occurred on a major highway two miles southeast of Belfast amid ongoing Northern Ireland violence.

Nixon Opens China Visit with Talks with Mao and Pledges

President Nixon began his China trip with an unscheduled talk with Mao Tse tung and a public pledge from Chou En Lai to build a normal relationship. Nixon urged both nations to move toward peace and justice, saying there is no reason for enmity and neither side seeks dominance. Chou welcomed the opening of contact and expressed willingness to work toward normal relations as they met at the Great Hall of the People. The day included multiple discussions, toasts, and homage to shared goals, with Nixon invoking Lincoln and Mao and both leaders stressing differences yet avoiding war.

Viet Nam border strike reports heavy enemy losses

South Vietnamese border Rangers struck a North Vietnamese base camp 100 miles south of Da Nang, claiming 62 enemy killed with two Rangers wounded. Helicopters evacuated hundreds of government troops for operations in the Central Highlands as U S bombers attacked ahead of infantry. Meanwhile Viet Cong attacks across the Mekong Delta wounded and killed soldiers and damaged bases, with multiple outposts overrun or threatened.

Drive on past 40 foot turnpike theater sparks reactions
