A report from Lorain County details a three week immersion among heroin addicts aged mostly under 22. The piece argues heroin use spans beyond inner-city ghettos into Elyria Lorain Vermilion and nearby towns, with many addicts living with relatives or in unstable housing.
Ohio lawmen led a nightlong operation at Pandora's Box in Elyria arresting 18 as more than 100 people were searched or detained. Co operators Albert Grasso and Steve Santana face charges of maintaining a drug sale site. 12 others are held on narcotics warrants. Authorities from the state attorney general’s office, Lorain County Sheriff Vernon M Smith and Prosecutor Joseph R. Granda coordinated the operation using about 80 deputies and aides. A quantity of drugs and some firearms was recovered.
Narcotics agents charged fifteen individuals in Lorain County after a raid on Pandora's Box described by Prosecutor Grunda as the state’s biggest trouble spot. Names include Camp Flood Dracke Vidal Sumner Bertram Jackson Perkins Nieves Linder Hazlett Ritter II and others.
Marshall Mason 36 of Indianapolis died when the State Highway Patrol cruiser he stole during an accident investigation plunged from the Ohio Turnpike into the Vermilion River. Erie County divers recovered his body at 7:15 P.M. after a four hour search. The cruiser, assigned to Ptl. J Johnson of Castalia Post, was later recovered. Street witness Joyce Horvath reported seeing the theft and the car breaking through a guardrail before entering the river.
The forecast calls for cooler conditions with highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s. Tonight lows dip to the upper 30s. Rain chances rise to around 30 percent tonight and near 99 percent tonight, with mixed skies followed by precipitation tomorrow.
About 60 Elyria Head Start parents petition to restore the Greater Elyria Council of Churches to Head Start operations. They will present petitions to the Lorain County EOC and Chicago regional HEW office, with a Chicago visit possible if action is not taken within three days.
