Stolen patrol car driver drowns after river plunge near Vermilion
Marshall Mason 36 of Indianapolis died when the State Highway Patrol cruiser he stole during an accident investigation plunged from the Ohio Turnpike into the Vermilion River. Erie County divers recovered his body at 7:15 P.M. after a four hour search. The cruiser, assigned to Ptl. J Johnson of Castalia Post, was later recovered. Street witness Joyce Horvath reported seeing the theft and the car breaking through a guardrail before entering the river.
