Washington’s Birthday Observed by Elytia Home Aged

An enthusiastic Washington's Birthday program at Elytia Home for Aged featured readings by Priscilla Jackson Myra Osborn and Miss Jennie Hoy, a Men's Chorus, tableaux including Spirit of Seventy Six and Birth of the Flag, scenes from Little Italy, and a Farewell Address. Paul Wainwright led solos and readings, with Rev J Stee Alpine and J M Huddleston among participants. Refreshments of Washington cookies punch and candy were served by the family and guests.

Reorganize Bible Class At Pilgrim Church

A Pilgrim church committee met at Mrs. John Scott’s home to reorganize the Bible class with Ernest McCall teaching and several members attending. They set a March 13 social meeting, planned use of Gospel hymnals, named committees for entertainment and refreshments, and closed with prayer.

Ask Funds For New Lock In Sea Canal

Washington on February 3 1913 an early enactment of a 3 million dollar authorizing plan for a new lock in the sea canal to expand ore transportation on the Great Lakes appeared probable. House action may follow Senate approval tied to a House Navy Pay bill rider. Senators Crown Burton urged prompt passage of the authorization as the canal is vital to industry and could be ready for use in late 1913.

Eight New Directors Elected to Elyria Chamber Board

Jeanette Macomber seeks divorce from Leven of Kenmore, married 1935. Mildred Jennings sues for divorce from George Jr. to restore maiden name Brucker. Donna Newhall granted temporary alimony of 25 a week and use of the couple's home and rent from upstairs apartment during the action.

Five More New Auto Purchases Given Approval

The Elvira Rationing Board announced certificates for five more new passenger automobiles bought before January 1. James Cash Penney of New York City received one for a new coupe not yet delivered from an Elyria dealer. Other recipients include C H Ingwer of Ohin street for a coupe and sedan, J F Diederich Sons Stop 7 Cleveland Road for a station wagon, and the Elyria Coach Company 414 Second Street for a sedan, all from Elyria dealers. The board has issued six certificates to date for undelivered pre January 1 purchases. The first certificate went to Miss Marjorie F Tressiter Colonial Apartments elementary school music supervisor.

Pre Military Training Proposed for Liberal Arts Colleges

Dr Ernest Wilkins of Oberlin College urged a general pre military training center in Liberal Arts curricula at a Chicago talk. He proposed course work featuring activities, drills, and manual of arms with Soldier's Hoard Book as text. Auto Collisions Reported To Police

Grafton Man Tops Aviation Aptitude Test

John Andrew Spitzer of 175 Main Street Gratina received the highest grade among men taking the mental aptitude test for aviation cadets in Cleveland on Thursday. The Lorain County District Board with headquarters at North Ridgeville reports Spitzer, registered with Board No. 5, has applied for enlistment as an aviation candidate and is set for a physical on March 3.

Engagements near Sumatra Slow the Japanese Invasion

In the Mast river area Sumatra Allied air forces including P-40 fighters and Japanese O Achiets engaged the enemy as transports and supply ships including the Koaphane were hit off Sumatra. Dutch reports say six Japanese fighters were driven from the battle with three shot down while two Allied planes were lost. At Washington a communiqué notes four Japanese aircraft were shot down and four American craft were damaged. No direct assault on Java reported through 10 30 pm January when Dutch forces were retreating to delay the enemy as long as possible.
