Wilford Berry Jr died by lethal injection at 9 31 p m in the Southern Ohio Correctional Institution Lucasville. The 36 year old who earned the moniker The Volunteer chose to abandon federal appeals and accept death for the 1989 shooting of Cleveland baker Charles Mitroff Jr during a robbery. Berry spent his last day separated from others, decline to write a last statement or receive visits.
The Chronicle Telegram reports Links Bakery owner Robert Brown aims to relocate the Lake Avenue bakery into the former New York Central Rail Road Station on Depot Street and open a deli next year pending financing. The Elyria Public Library already owns the Broad Street license bureau building and nearby parcels. officials consider expansion plans and potential land purchases, while station owner William Kennedy and other nearby property owners have not committed.
Avon Mayor James Smith and cousin Dale Smitek own properties north of I 90 at 1591 and 1610 Center Road about a quarter mile from the Avon Commons site. Smith says AvonCommns in Avon commercial is a separate rental and investment venture not connected to Mitchell Schneider’s Avon Commons project. City officials say no conflict exists unless a mayor uses office to benefit a developer or raise property values.
