Oberlin Feb 19 The Conference on Prison Conditions in Ohio ends with a call for abolition of county jails and capital punishment. A statewide Ohio Committee on Penal Conditions is formed with H A Miller as permanent chairman and Mrs. O Peabody as secretary and treasurer. The group seeks indeterminate sentencing, probation expansion, removal of partisan influence from welfare and pardon boards, prison labor reform, and individualized treatment through comprehensive investigations.

Judge Florence Allen Opposes Gifford Bill on Judicial Nominations
Columbus, Feb. 19 The state supreme judge urged enactment of a law requiring all nominations for judge to be by dependent petition and to deprive political parties of nominating power. Allen opposed a Gifford bill eliminating most judges from the nonpartisan ticket via primary action. The bill is set for senate passage Tuesday.

Prison reformer Hart visits Oberlin jail discovery
Dr Hastings Hart veteran prison reformer and Oberlin College alumnus returned from a jail investigation at the Oberlin jail in the town hall. He challenged local officials asking who has visited their own jail and offered $1 to someone to stand in the jail and shake the blankets and $2 to spend two minutes on the bed. The jail has been unoccupied for two weeks and averages four or five inmates a year.

Toledo February 19 searchers widened a lake to lake sweep from Put-in-Bay to Port Clinton after Dr Theodore Greist and Toledo nurse Miss Sylvia Schultz disappeared Saturday while riding in the doctor's auto.
