Ice breaking on river slows flooding fears near Parsons to Vermillion
Scarpelli notes many customers along the river from Parsons to Vermillion and worries flood damage could hinder seasons. A 25 ton barge with crane wrecking ball and 56 000 pound excavator worked north of the Liberty Avenue bridge to break ice jams. Earlier in the week crews used a smaller barge to clear the ice as a New Year effort. The veteran icebreaker says he prefers quiet operations and avoids newspaper attention.
