Lorain County Ranks 36th in Ohio Health Analysis

Lorain County sits 36th of 88 counties in overall health factors such as morbidity mortality rates low birth weight and access to healthy foods. Medina County ranks fourth while Cuyahoga County is the Northeast region’s unhealthiest at No 70. Health Commissioner Ken Pearce says the data will help set improvement benchmarks.

Lorain District Finalizes Recovery Plan For Consolidation

Lorain students from Southview and Admiral King high schools will attend Admiral King with a new name colors and mascot by fall as the district consolidates due to finances and falling enrollment. The temporary Admiral King site will host until a new high school opens by fall 2014.

Plan components target program eliminations and new grants

The plan trims courses with limited interest while keeping class sizes around 30. Federal grant funding supports a hands on science lab, two years toward air traffic control licensure, and a culinary arts program. Students can graduate with an associate degree from Lorain County Community College. Grant funds also cover an alternative energy technology program. Busing is provided beyond two miles with limited extracurricular routes. A partnership with Lorain police will add campus resource officers.

Arson suspects charged in Lorain North Central fires

Lorain men Michael Agosto and Joseph Romero, both residents of North Central Drive, were charged with four counts of arson and four counts of breaking and entering after arrest by the U S Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force. Investigators say the fires were set for entertainment value with no apparent motive.

Threat clears EHS as water main break halves classes

Elyria High was evacuated after a threat and later closed two hours early when workers hit a water main tied to the new high school project. District officials said classes were canceled briefly but will resume today after crews addressed the break.

Elyria man in jail after chase ends in West Avenue crash

Elyria police say Jason Delaney, 27, fled officers in a black Corsica with temporary tags and crashed into the corner of a three story brick house at 1800 West Avenue after losing control while turning onto 18th Street. A snowbank and shrubbery were involved. no serious injuries reported. Jarvis Gordon, a resident, witnessed the incident as his TV signal cut out.
