President Eisenhower accepted Harold E. Stassen's resignation as disarmament adviser effective immediately. Stassen will seek the Republican gubernatorial nomination in Pennsylvania, announcing plans later today. White House secretary James Hagerty released letters confirming the move and denying any push to leave the administration.

Paris accepted the United States offer to use its good offices in the Tunisia dispute but ruled out any arbitration. Premier Gaillard led an emergency cabinet meeting to plan a diplomatic counter-offensive while Emile Claparede stressed arbitration would not be accepted. French officials said American diplomats in Tunis Paris Washington and the United Nations would help facilitate negotiations with no U.S. imposed solution.
The Tunisian government accused France of massing troops tanks and artillery along the Algeria Tunisia border near Sakiet Sidi Youssef. The move raised fears of border violence amid France Algeria civil war tensions. Bourguiba pressed for France to pull out 15000 troops and abandon the Bi zerte base while Paris accused Tunisia of aiding Algerian rebels. The UN Security Council hearing looms as world opinion shifts.
