Ford UAW reach historic tentative accord on cost cuts
Ford Motor Co and the United Auto Workers reached a 31 month tentative agreement in Detroit, aiming to save over 1 billion by freezing cost of living raises, removing nine paid holidays, and expanding an employment guarantee and SUB program. The pact limits outsourcing, offers 50 percent income when laid off for workers with 15 years service until age 62, and includes profit sharing and training programs. Union approval faces a Ford Council vote in Chicago before rank and file ratification, with about 170,000 UAW members affected.

County needs more doctors by '90 study for EMH says
A Lorain County doctor shortage debate centers on a hospital consultant study for Elyria Memorial Hospital. The 1980 figures show 290 physicians in the county, one per 942 residents, with weak primary care ratios. The report contrasts 1977 regional and state figures, and federal views question the need. Officials caution the data are consultant opinions and require staff and board review.

Signs and vandals drive high cost of replacements
Williams notes traffic accidents account for about 5 percent of signs needing replacement but argues that many signs are ripped off or pushed over by vandals in vehicles. The question remains where these damaged signs end up, with speculation about motives behind the acts.
