Bridge Blasts in Ohio Route 57 Demolition Cleared West Lanes
The westbound lanes of the Route 57 bridge over the Black River near Gulf Road and West River Road were demolished Tuesday with explosives. The event, overseen by ODOT engineer Nick Donofrio, required police and fire officials and closed the western span for safety. Traffic resumed in about 25 minutes as eastern lanes remained open, with project work ongoing through fall 2004 for full replacement. Beth Wilson of ODOT cited structural deficiencies and planned staged demolitions, with west lanes expected to finish by November and the east lanes slated for removal next year.
