Beards win praise for Vertina Awards serving youth and community
DOLLS From 64 year-old woman had recently married and was working as an air traffic controller. Their daughter's death spawned the Beards' interest in the arts and community service, they said. Since 1992, the Vertina Youth Awards Program has recognized community service and academic excellence among both youth and adults. Awards go to those who overcome a disability and do community service, an organization that works on behalf of children, students with high scholastic achievement, student who do community service and adults who do community service. The awards have been recognized by the Lorain County commissioners and President Bill Clinton. In addition to their work in the community, the two are raising their grandson and they have had two foster sons for the past eight years. The Beards, who have been married for 20 years, are both retired from General Motors where they met. In those days Mary Beard, a working mother, says she was content being single. Then she met her husband. "He's very special. He married me when I had six children," she said. To receive a nomination form for the Vertina Awards, call the Beards at 365-7914 or send a self addressed stamped envelope to The Corner Shop, 193 Burns Road, Elyria, Ohio 44035-1531. The deadline is March 31. The winners will be recognized at a banquet May 18. There also will be a raffle for a seven-day visit to a condominium in Orlando, Fig.
