UAW eyes job security in Ford talks amid concessions
John Hunter of UAW Local 2000 says optimism abounds as Ford and union negotiators plan to open talks on a three year contract. The union seeks job security and limits on outsourcing, while Ford reportedly aims to offset last year's losses with wage and benefit give backs totaling up to one billion dollars. Talks begin in July with three major automakers. GM talks recently stalled. Hunter stresses need for assurances of job safety before accepting concessions.

Planners fate lies with Lorain County commissioners
Lorain County Regional Commission faces three operating options chosen by RPC Director Richard McGinnis after budget cuts. With county funding cut to 50 000 this year from 134 000 in 1981 and Lorain pulling out of the APC cutting over 18 000 in revenue the RPC seeks staff reductions new service contracts and potential townships levy. The group could move to a leaner fiscal base relocate offices and pursue a 0.2 mill operating levy though a previous levy failed while staff tweaks and possible retirement of McGinnis loom as options and the county's wishes drive financial needs.

Road-clearing? A Florida reply to snow survey sparks irony
A C-T Pavement Pete snow-clearing survey in Florida prompts a Fort Myers reader to rate his community's work as Excellent despite US winter cold elsewhere. The letter from Max Jalowiec of Brentwood Golf Club notes warm days, asks to keep alligators off roads, and jestingly wishes the Chronicle a “Happy Hurricane” as sub zero conditions persist elsewhere.
