Aid applications plunge to lowest in nearly three years
Weekly unemployment claims dropped 36 000 to 383 000 the lowest since July 2008 the Labor Department said. Snow storms may have aided the decline though analysts see better hiring ahead and a two year low in the rate. The unemployment rate fell to 9 percent in January with about 14 million out of work.

Goodyear to idle 1900 at Union City plant
Goodyear Tire and Rubber will shut its Union City Tennessee site by year end 2011 idling about 1900 workers. Production will continue until late this year with jobs moving to Fayetteville North Carolina and Gadsden Alabama and displaced workers offered lump sum pay or plant-application priority.
