Audubon study shows birds wintering farther north due to warming
An Audubon Society study of 305 North American bird species finds over half now winter farther north than four decades ago. The purple finch moved most strongly, shift tied to about 5 degree Fahrenheit January warming, with implications for species range and future Canada retreat.

Madoff and SEC reach deal in civil action
The SEC announced an agreement with Bernard Madoff that could require him to pay a civil fine and forfeit money raised from investors. The partial judgment would make permanent a preliminary injunction freezing assets. a judge in Manhattan federal court must approve. The civil action runs separately from the criminal case in what prosecutors say is a $50 billion alleged Ponzi scheme.

A Four Dollar Fix Aims to Stop Jail Sewer Woes
Sunbury officials warned Northumberland County of 25000 daily fines if the jail continued dumping debris into the sewer. Warden Ralph Reish says a homemade trap costing under four dollars was placed in one cell and stopped debris from entering the system, the toilet backed up, and inmates were disciplined.
