Low fat diet study shakes public confidence on heart risk
The Journal of the American Medical Association reports a large study of 48,095 postmenopausal women aged 60 to 79 found no significant differences in colon cancer, breast cancer, heart attack, or stroke between those on a low fat diet and those eating freely. Experts caution against abandoning healthy dietary balance and emphasize fat type over total fat. Trans fats from hydrogenated oils and saturated fats from animal and certain plant sources raise cholesterol and heart disease risk, so simply reducing all fats is not advised.
