A Chronicle Telegram straw poll of 221 readers shows 168 want a local anti smoking ordinance restricting smoking in public areas and workplaces. Ten smokers and ten non responders abstain, while 53 oppose citing personal rights and skepticism about government limits.

In Lorain 28 year old Terry Orr is accused of beating his mother Melvina Orr 61 with bowling trophies after an argument about employment. She remained in critical condition at Lorain Community Hospital ICU with injuries to head face and hands. He was arrested after police found him nearby and faces felonious assault charges in Lorain Municipal Court.
1984 Ohio Health Dept data show 766 heart-related deaths in Lorain County, lowest in three years, with coronary disease leading and strokes, high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, rheumatic heart disease and congenital defects also listed. American Heart Association cautions on prevention and risk factors.
Dianne Moseley, 40, will trek from Los Angeles to Washington with PROPEACE. The walk begins this month and passes Lorain County in September. She left Lorain Community College after two years of studying and plans to bring three pairs of hiking shoes for the journey.
