Pueblo talks raise hope for crew release

Hopes rose after the fifth US North Korea private meeting at Panmunjom and talk of final steps toward releasing the Pueblo crew. US officials provided few details while Seoul signals suggest South Korea may seek control of its armed forces and a broader security accord with Washington.

Windy and very cold with mostly cloudy skies. Occasional snow flurries today tonight and Sunday. Highs near 8 to 15 degrees, tonight's low around minus five. Sunset 5 55, sunrise 7 26. Temperatures peak around 20 degrees at 1 pm yesterday, low 2 degrees at 7 45 am today.

Twenty four saved at sea as ship abandoned 350 miles off Cape Hatters

Coast Guard said twenty four people were rescued from two lifeboats and a life raft after abandoning the freighter Charny 350 miles off Cape Hatters North Carolina. The Charny listed badly but stayed afloat as eight foot seas raged. Nearby the Pegasus freighter with six crew aboard leaked oil from hull cracks and formed a visible slick.

U S military spokesmen report sighting two or possibly three Soviet made Beagle TL2E jet bombers at Pha Yen air field near Hanoi 18 miles northwest in North Vietnam The Beagles are twin jets carrying about 6000 pounds of bombs The first sighting marks the appearance of bombing planes in North Vietnam during the war The fighters report one strike near a Beagle and another Beagle in a taxiway no hits claimed The incident follows North Vietnam’s use of tanks at Lang Ver in the northwest of South Vietnam where nine Russian made light amphibious tanks were deployed to defend a captured Special Forces camp The L28 class tank has a three man crew and speeds up to 440 miles per hour with a range of about 59 miles The tank entered production in 1990
