Japanese forces concentrate at Woosung and Shanghai for a decisive drive to push the Chinese army 20 miles from the city. Chinese redispose troops to meet the attack as ominous signs point to a major battle on the 20 mile front from Woosung Forts to Shanghai. Foreign guards around the settlement stay alert for contingencies.
A rare and brutal Arctic cold snap hit Britain and Northern Europe as a major blizzard packed heavy snow sleet and bitter gales. East coast seas surged over channel vessels while many ships remained in port and fishing boats sheltered in harbors amid dangerous breakers.

John Z Birmingham of 80 Chestnut Street retired from the New York Central on February 1. After 30 years with the railroad he received a smoking outfit from Elyria depot employees led by J F Sparks. He formerly worked on the Wheeling and Lake Erie for 16 years and has lived in Elyria nearly ten years with his wife four sons and two daughters.
The Federal Hospitalization Board has reached an agreement on expanding hospitalization facilities in Ohio. General Frank Hines announced after a conference with President Hoover that details would not be disclosed until approved by the president.
A weather bulletin notes unsettled conditions in the area with light rain possible tonight and Thursday. Temperatures set to be slightly cooler in the west while readings show minus six to minus eight in northern communities and lower highs elsewhere. British author and playwright Edgar Wallace died in Beverly Hills at 4:45 am after a brief illness from double pneumonia contracted following a cold. He would have turned 57 next April. Wallace authored many mystery stories and screenplays for RKO Pathe, with several works already produced or near completion. Funeral plans await his wife Ethel Violet Wallace’s arrival.
Jaycox and Lear roads in Avon Lake Village will be upgraded through a joint action by the village and county. The county will purchase and finance the necessary work following a decision by commissioners yesterday afternoon.
Specialists from Ohio State University and local industry leaders spoke at a Lorain County vegetable growers meeting at the YMCA. Afternoon topics included building soil cover crops and marketing garden crops. Evening talks covered fertilizers insect and disease control and marketing vegetables in Cleveland in 1932.
After nine days without a call Elyzia firemen ran to two alarms within six hours. At 12 30 a.m. smoke from a stove triggered a fire at Royal Creamery Co. store 506 Middle Avenue. At 6 22 a.m. a motor burned out in an air compressor at Ederread Tire and Supply Co. 109 Broad Street, causing no other damage.
Approximately 500 tons of slag will be used for the project and the village plans to apply it.
Edward Levisy pleaded not guilty to manslaughter and was bound to the grand jury under a $1000 bond when arraigned before Mayor W H Van Oster. Police say Levisy struck Franklin B Lee age 88, who died from injuries after the February 1 accident at Middle avenue and Second street.
Albert Johnson known as bush crazy escapes from a large police pursuit across Rat River region. Arctic flier Captain W R May reports Johnson eluded a barricade amid blizzards and deep cold while authorities mount a renewed search with trappers and Eskimo guides assisting.
Washington bulletin reports sentiment growing in the House Ways and Means committee for a general tax of one or two percent on manufactured goods. The panel previously rejected such a tax but has revisited it to help balance the next year’s budget by raising several hundred million dollars more than earlier estimates.
The Lorain County Taxpayers League executive committee adopted regulations governing the new group last night. Plans to recruit members and study taxes and public expenditures were begun ahead of a February 23 meeting to review member appeals and set a campaign if needed.

William Moss twenty one of Hartford was fatally injured when caught in a belt at a portable saw mill on a farm near Kinsman. He died at Warren City Hospital shortly after midnight.
Fourteen candidates were nominated for Elyria Chamber of Commerce directors in the primary. Seven will be elected next Tuesday. ballots go out tomorrow and must be returned by 4 p m. Candidates include E W Bell T N Cook J R Dall G E Gould and others. None are current directors due to by law against re election. Seven new directors join eight hold overs.
