Los Angeles report says actress Mabel Normand is set to testify as part of a grand jury inquiry into the death of William D Taylor. Authorities pursue a mysterious caller, a possible blackmail plot, and a recent $2,500 bank withdrawal tied to the case.
Belfast reports an army of about 7000 men led by former British officers has gathered on Ulster’s western border near Amagh Tyrone. The force includes police, constabulary, volunteers, and ex-soldiers. Sinn Fein leaders fear a move by Ulster forces and Orangemen amid stern border tensions.
A boiler explosion at the George A Rutherford Company on Prospect Avenue in Cleveland killed Charles Hlue and injured two others seriously with several more lightly hurt. The blast damaged surrounding buildings and halted streetcar traffic as firefighters and police responded to the morning incident.
Judge H G Redington will arbitrate between two Elyria banks and other creditors of Bennett Milling Co. at Grafton. He will rule on what items are permanent fixtures, what are not, and what remains undecidable. Banks claim 43000 dollars worth of mill property used in manufacturing.
Mrs Amg Marie Lapp 51 of 247 Cornell avenue died at Memorial hospital this morning after surgery for goiter. Born in Germany she arrived in America at eleven and settled in Amherst before moving to Elyria. Survived by husband George H Sapp and children Albert George Harry Chester Pearl Mildred plus her mother Mrs Jacob Warner and three sisters and three brothers. Funeral from home Monday at 3 pm conducted by Key Burner. Burial follows.
Elyria residents heard Congressman Simeon D. Fess speak at a Kiwanis luncheon about the peace conference. He warned of war debts, currency devaluations, and the burden of past wars while urging disarmament and timely action to ensure conference success.
Rome Feb 10 Signor Bon omi who resigned as premier on Feb 2 promised King Victor Emmanuel to remain in office with his old ministry. He will defend his policy before the chamber of deputies next Tuesday. The king has failed to find a statesman to form a new cabinet. The religious question looms as Vatican Quirinal rapprochement is considered.
London February 10 The government economic committee led by Mr Eric Geddes urged a curtailment of 340.9 million dollars in British government expenditures for the upcoming local year, with the plan outlined to curb spending.
Washington February 10 Congress agreed on a tax plan to raise funds for a soldier bonus. The Ways and Means Committee proposed taxes including tobacco, cigarettes, automobiles, gasoline, stock transfers, real estate transfers, and theater tickets to cover about 350 million dollars in the first year. The plan doubles theater tax and imposes a per seat levy, with details pending final approval.
