President Eisenhower met with Secretary of State Dulles to discuss the Tunisian crisis triggered by French bombing of a Tunisian town. The White House said Dulles conveyed U.S. concern to French Ambassador Hervé Alphand on the president's instructions.
A massive winter storm in New York triggered nationwide disruptions as at least 10 deaths were blamed on blizzards and freezing conditions. The bomb attack on a Tunisian village spurred Western fears, with France and Tunisia trading diplomatic tensions and the United States calling the incident disturbing.
A 15 year old boy, John Bounes of 1108 Sixth St., died after a motorbike he rode with 14 year old Robert Merves was struck by a car driven by John H. Osko at the Washington Ave and Eighth St intersection. Merves was hospitalized in fair condition with shock and knee bruises. Osko, from 400 Idaho Ave., said he could not avoid the collision after seeing the youths on the bike. Police reported no skid marks and file no charges at this time.
Former VP Richard Nixon warns Americans that the gravest threat is Soviet propaganda and subversion rather than direct war. He says the United States must boost information programs abroad, especially in Asia, Africa, the Near East and Latin America, and notes foreign aid and USIA reforms are needed.
Caroline Textor, 24, adopted daughter of an American Crayon Co heiress, suffocated in her two room Cleveland apartment after apparently falling asleep with a lit cigarette. Firefighters found her body in a bathroom near the blaze. Authorities said she had a trust fund and her known relatives were cousins in Sandusky and Sheffield Lake.
Donald Jameson of the U S Weather Bureau reported from Oberlin that it was very cold as he accompanied 15 Boy Scouts from Troop 101 to Camp Firelands for an overnight stay. The thermometer dropped to five below zero and the group burned over a cord of wood.

The US Navy introduces a rocket assisted torpedo nicknamed the Rat as a cross breed of ballistic missile and torpedo. Coupled to a destroyer turret it launches the weapon through the air to strike submarines miles away, promising a 300 percent increase in anti submarine range and a vast expansion from hundreds of yards to many square miles.
A House subcommittee investigating alleged misconduct in the Federal Communications Commission voted to keep its controversial chief counsel. The panel faced questions about its own handling of the inquiry as the decision was announced.

Otis K. Emch III, 24, former New London resident and son of Otis K. Emch Sr, died yesterday morning on Oahu in the Hawaiian Islands. He worked for the Dole Pineapple Co and had lived there about four years since leaving the Navy. He was married with a young daughter and son. His wife is Hawaiian. He is survived by his mother, a sister in Mansfeld, and two brothers in Sandusky and New London. Funeral services will be held in Hawaii.
The White House said President Eisenhower's sore throat is better though his voice remains husky. Press secretary James Hagerty said the president seems to be feeling better and that the hoarseness has diminished as he tentatively plans a Wednesday departure for a Georgia vacation.
