State House fails to push school tax despite cross party support

Ohio House, 60-39 GOP majority, falls short of 60 votes needed to place a 1 cent sales tax before voters May 5 for a new school funding plan. Twenty-five Democrats backed the measure, while three Chronicle readers' Republicans voted against it, including Batchelder and Kasputis. Speaker Jo Ann Davidson called it a near consensus, but Democrats mocked the effort as a failure to muster conservative support.

Scalia warned of narrow focus eroding safeguards, biasing investigations, and rewarding indictments over accountability. Sunstein urges repeal to restore checks and broad prosecutorial scope.
