Elyria Man Retires After 32 Years With New York Central
W. N. Bird of Elyria receives honors from the local Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen for 32 years of service with the New York Central. Born in England, he worked briefly on the Midland and Great Northern railways before immigrating in 1911. He joined the York Central May 24 1916, became a freight conductor in 1925, and retired January 15, 1949. He is married with two children and a grandson.

Funeral Services For Lt. Col. Richard Crooks Saturday
Funeral services for Lt Col Richard Crooks killed in action in the Pacific during World War II will be held at 2 pm Saturday from Taylor Funeral Home. The Rev James Leonard will officiate and burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery. Crooks, son of C C and Mrs Crooks of Willard, born 1911 in Bucyrus, lived in Elyria 26 years, and died February 14, 1945 in Manila. He served with the 37th Division in Fiji Rendova Munda Vella Lavella Bougainville and the Philippine Islands and received the Legion of Merit in 1944. Survivors include his parents and four sisters.

NYC Will Lay Off 3400 Shop Employees
The New York Central Railroad will lay off about 3400 repair shop workers in Ohio and New York due to a 30 percent drop in freight traffic.
