Bender Bows Out of Elyria Mayoral Bid

State Rep. John Bender announced he will not run against Mayor Michael Keys in the Elyria Democratic primary. Bender cited his duties as ranking Democrat on the House Education Committee and a new Joint Ethics Committee appointment as factors. He has served in the House since 1993 and will term out in 2000 after six years on City Council. Keys welcomed the decision, calling a primary costly and potentially divisive. Defendant seeks withdrawal of Lorain drug case pleas

Derrick English, 37, of Lorain, was convicted Jan. 20 after pleading guilty to drug trafficking and related charges. His bond was reduced then raised again due to concerns about his willingness to appear at sentencing and cooperate with background checks. Attorneys sparred over a claimed leniency deal, with prosecutor Rosenbaum denying any such agreement. The judge permitting further testimony, English testified that Lt. Rohner urged him to buy drugs while free on bond.

Tyson gets year in jail
