Mapping software jolts city with efficiency
New York uses the Citywide Geographic Information Systems to overlay aerial, census, crime, and utility data on a detailed interactive map. The system guides heating center placement, fire and police dispatch, road closures, and security planning for events. It cost about $20 million over ten years and aided Sept 11 response and preparations for the Republican National Convention.
