Cleveland firm seeks higher fees in Kent State case appeal
A Cleveland law firm appeals to the 6th Circuit to set aside a March 1979 fee award of 33,740 and pursue more from the 1979 settlement over the Kent State shootings. The case stems from Ohio National Guardsmen firing on protesters in May 1970, killing four students. the settlement limited costs to 25,000 and lawyers fees to 50,000, with funds provided by the Ohio Controlling Board. The firm argues the award undervalues thousands of hours of work, while plaintiffs’ counsel contends the judge acted wisely to settle the unique case. Dean Kahler, severely injured, attended the proceedings in a wheelchair.
