Yamashita's Appeal Denied By The Supreme Court

The Supreme Court upholds Yamashita's conviction for atrocities in the Philippines. Tomoyuki Yamashita was sentenced to death. the court denies his appeal and rescinds a stay of execution, clearing the way for the Army to carry out the sentence. Chief Justice Harlan Stone delivered the decision.

Columbus Gov Frank Lausche filed renomination petitions for governor and for U S Senate in the May primary. John W Bricker former Ohio governor and 1944 Republican vice presidential nominee also filed petitions for the Senate race against incumbent James W Hot Man.

Lieut GC Willard Smith U S Naval Reserve officer on terminal leave and his wife Harriette visit the home of his father AWG Smith at 228 Hamilton avenue. Major Robinson Set To Return As Health Commissioner

Major Harold A. Robinson of 407 Cambridge Avenue is on terminal leave from the Army Medical Corps and plans to resume his medical practice and duties as city health commissioner. He previously led as health chief before entering the service September 9, 1942, and has been stationed at Smyrna Army Air Field, Smyrna Tennessee. He hopes to rejoin his practice by March and to assume his health department post again.

County officials seek extra funds for consulting engineer

County commissioners passed a resolution yesterday requesting the county budget commission to provide an additional $5,000 for a consulting engineer to prepare plans for a proposed water system in Ridgeville. If the project proceeds the cost would be charged to benefitting properties. otherwise the county bears the expense.

Foxes Endanger Pheasant Population in Columbia Lowisi

In a two week span foxes in western Columbia Lowisi caused hen and sheep losses and nearly wiped out pheasants. Hunters have begun control efforts, with fox hounds purchased and a county funded bounty program in place. Deer sightings remain rare as residents discuss protecting local game.

Attorney Returns From Military Service Overseas

Elyria attorney Lawrence Agchenbach returned home after roughly four and a half years in the Army. He served in the Army criminal investigation agency and was stationed in China and Shanghai before discharge at Camp Atterbury. Elyria Firemen Fight Six Grass And Home Fires

Elyria firemen answered six alarms yesterday with four grass fires added to a grass fire and a small home fire that had been set earlier. The largest blaze burned 14 acres in a stubble field on West River Road near a barn at L. G. Bliss’s farm in Elyria Township. Neighbors aided in the effort. crews were on scene about an hour. Earlier, a grass fire of over an acre on Wesley Avenue burned, along with a five or six acre blaze in Musses Avenue area. Fires blamed on matches and a boy with matches were reported. This day brought the highest alarm total for the Elyria Fire Department to date, with 50 days tally reaching 146.

Five Die Of Gas In Cadiz Ambulance

Five persons died from carbon monoxide poisoning when an ambulance stalled crossing a flooded creek near Cadiz Trigg County. Victims include Mrs Mack Cunningham and her granddaughter Mrs John Burkett along with Terry H Fuqua and Elliott Tinsley the driver. Haydon Cunningham attempted to seek help as the vehicle filled with fumes.
