Local Red Cross reports $1700 raised for drought relief, with a $3200 county quota. Elyria city contributions are under $1000. A public meeting is held tomorrow at 4 p.m. in Lorraine County Bank to survey needs and plan funding.
The specific charges to be pressed by the Navy at Maj. Gen. Smedley D. Butler’s court martial in Philadelphia on February 16 remain secret to the public. The case grows more severe than anticipated after Hoover asked to soften them, with Butler and chief counsel Major Henry Leonard planning defense strategy and witnesses to be interviewed in Philadelphia.
Fred Bates of Lorain was fined $200 and costs by Justice Walter H. Watts on a liquor possession charge. Bates was arrested days earlier by State Agent George Baynham.

In Hawkes Bay New Zealand officials report almost 200 bodies recovered from the quake wreckage. Fifty had already been buried and the remaining victims were placed in a common grave with a combined service for unidentified dead.
Common pleas court sessions were slowed as two of the three judges were absent. Judge W B Thompson stayed home with a cold while Judge A R Webber left for a Rotary engagement in Cleveland. Judge W P Vaughn presided alone this morning and remained busy. Thompson’s condition was reported improved today.

McDonald former secretary treasurer and manager of the Port City Mortgage Company must appear in common pleas court February 5 to show cause why a $1215.29 judgment should not attach against his and his wife’s property. A blaze at 143 Cleveland Street forced four families and the owner’s household to flee. Fire Chief W N Batea estimated damage at 800 to 1000 dollars, origin in a second floor pantry, and firemen fought 62 minutes. The building housed five families and the incident hinges on an unoccupied unit at discovery. The cause remains undetermined.
The Elyria health department report for 1930 shows 302 deaths and 628 births, with birth and death rates down from 1929 though infant mortality up. Heart disease, pneumonia, and tuberculosis top the death causes, while whooping cough and scarlet fever led in disease visits. 1,098 nurse visits were recorded and eight TB clinics were held with 199 patients.

Police report a front window at 71% Weat River Street home of Alex and Henry Stiles damaged by a gua pipe cap thrown through glass. A witness on the second floor, Mrs. Benjamine Shapiro, provided a suspect name to investigators.

Coroner Arthur J. Pearse opened an inquiry into the death of Rev. Brinley Abbott 45 former rector of St John s Episcopal Church in Cleveland Ohio. Abbott was found dead last night in the Grace Episcopal Church South recreation house with a two ounce bottle believed to contain poison nearby. Police said he wore his overcoat and lay face down at a stair foot. Officials described death as self inflicted while noting distress over a reported death of a brother and illness of one of his three children in England.
Mrs Florence Nichols of Akron was treated yesterday afternoon for injuries after a car she rode in swerved crossed the road and overturned about one mile west of Brighton. Dr Ralph Favs of Wellington attended her. Her husband and friends were present. The article notes a fire in Falla last Monday that displaced a family.
