Ohio Livestock Co-ops Push Direct Marketing to Packers
Ohio livestock producers expanded cooperative sales to packers during wartime, creating about 20 concentration points including Washington D C H, and directing hogs to packers on a dressed weight basis. About 25 percent of Ohio hogs sold directly to packers last year, bypassing terminal markets. The plan guarantees dressed percentages and pays producers a portion of the sale price on delivery, finalizing after slaughter and dressing percent is computed. The initiative draws interest from other states and has spread to Indiana.

New England Seen As Haven For New York Gangsters
Portland police believe New York gangsters flee to New England amid a crackdown. A Portland Foundry paymaster, Jacob F. Coombs, was robbed of 2000 in daylight as a bandit struck with a pistol. A Providence suspect, Helen Badessa, 21, fights extradition after a jewel theft. Masked raiders robbed Napoleon Ledoux of Suco, and other crimes tied to payroll thefts are noted. Police estimate two million cars will be scrapped this year amid broader crime reports.
