Elyria police reported eastbound traffic backed up about eight miles to Middle Ridge Road before it was rerouted around interchanges. Route 2 eastbound reopened and salted about 10 45 p m. Police noted a flurry of minor accidents from the morning snowfall with slick I-71 conditions in Cuyahoga Bay.
Police recovered grisly remains after a Sunday prison takeover at the New Mexico State Penitentiary. About 800 inmates remained outside the riot area in subfreezing conditions as guards and National Guard units searched fire-ravaged wings for more victims. Initial counts cited 32 dead with fears of higher toll as burned records hindered tallying.
Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini rejected outside interference by the United States and the Soviet Union while suggesting a meeting with Iran's new president to discuss a U.N. plan for releasing the hostages. He urged Afghan–Iranese solidarity and called for Arab and Palestinian unity against Zionism and imperialism.
Elyria police reports show a 20 percent rise in crime for 1979, with rapes and robberies highlighted as areas of concern. Police Chief Paul Brand cited “uncontrollable factors,” a manpower shortage, and a recent study urging 18 more patrolmen to meet rising crime, including a 100 percent jump in rapes and 120 robberies.
Scott Miller, the WOBL disc jockey who staged a 50 day on air protest over the hostage crisis at the American embassy in Iran, was fired this morning by station owner Harry Wilber. Wilber said he is shocked by the actions. Miller had planned to meet with President Jimmy Carter on Wednesday.
Federal prosecutors prepare to present evidence to grand juries in New York, Washington, Newark, and Philadelphia in a sprawling public corruption case. Eight members of Congress and over 20 other officials are under scrutiny as investigators trace nearly $700,000 amid a two year probe. Indictments are not expected this February.
Cleveland Cavaliers general partner Nick J. Mileti announced he will sell by June 1 his majority interest in the publicly held franchise. He owns 155,000 shares and seeks about 1.4 million for his stock, aiming to find a buyer for the entire club.
