Greece seeks extra 20 billion to cut debt load

Greece needs about 20 billion more to reach a sustainable debt level, with eurozone governments and the IMF weighing a larger bailout. A proposal to reduce debt by 131 billion with private investors and deep spending cuts could lead to a 170 billion rescue, but EU officials say more is required. The extra funds might come from other euro nations or ECB and banks taking losses on Greek bonds, though EU treaty limits complicate such write downs.

Mixed January retail results mask uneven consumer demand

U S retailers reported a mixed January with a 4.8 percent gain from 20 ICSC retailers, led by Target and Saks while Macy’s and mid price clothing chains lagged. Industry watchers say underlying demand remains but spending is uneven amid a cautious economy. Costco and discounters showed strength with gains above analyst forecasts. Target also surpassed expectations with a 4.3 percent rise in same store sales.

Former MF Global official warned CEO of collapse

A former MF Global chief risk officer testified that he warned then CEO Jon Corzine in October 2010 about the dangers of large bets on European government debt as the position neared four billion dollars.
