Weather history notes Snag Yukon recording a Canadian low of minus 81 degrees on February 3 1047. On the same day interior Alaska saw readings down to minus 75 degrees.
Shell Waller and her daughter Heather Ewing ran to a neighbor’s house on East Avenue and Fifth Street after smelling smoke. Waller broke a window to enter the home owned by 58-year-old John Toomey in a bid to find his brother, but the flames drove them out. Firefighters battled the fire as investigators began to inspect the scene.
The Associated Press notes Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow predicting six more weeks of winter, while Buckeye Chuck in Ohio did not see a shadow indicating an early spring. Crowd of about 200 watched as Phil was pulled from his stump at 7 42 a.m under cloudy skies.
