DC infant death rate tops US in study

The Children's Defense Fund reports Washington DC has the highest current infant mortality in the United States, with black babies in the city at even greater risk. The national rate in 1984 was about 11 deaths per 1000 live births, while DC's rate is quoted as far above the national average. Experts urge more funding for maternal and infant nutrition and better access to care for poor women.

Gunfight sets stage for new gun control fight in Congress

In a fresh battle over firearms policy, Sen. Howard Metzenbaum and Rep. Edward Feighan push a seven day waiting period for handgun purchases. Law enforcement and handgun groups back the measure while the NRA opposes it and proposes cross state sales. Barbara Lautman of Handgun Control Inc. says the bill is a flagship for the 100th Congress. Sarah Brady ads highlight past gun violence and a waiting period could have exposed the Hinckley lie.
