A sequence of earthquakes struck Santiago de Cuba early today causing extensive damage. Gov. Jose Barcelo said 12 people were known dead and about 300 injured as hospitals and power plants were damaged and residents fled to the streets.
Col. Frank Murbach addressed the local American Legion Auxiliary on Our National Preparedness. He cited The National Defense Act of 1920 and discussed three lines of defense, details on the Regular Army Reserve Corps and Navy transports sailing under sealed orders, with notes on ROTC and CMT camps and training.
Ohio forecast shows cloudy skies and a drop in temperatures through tonight and Thursday. Light rain or snow possible in extreme south and extreme east portions of the state.
Michael Benzak aged 30 faces a first degree murder trial set for February 23 after a February 15 date was canceled. A venire of 55 jurors will be drawn to select 12 for the case charging him with shooting Alice Dernier Wedic on Duikee road in Eaton Township on November 19. Authorities found Wedic dead in Benzak’s car and Benzak nearby wounded from a self inflicted gunshot.
Albert B. Fall continues to serve his one year and two day sentence for involvement in the oil lease scandal. The U S parole board denied parole and said the act does not apply to a grave offense against the government and civilization. Fall was convicted of accepting a $100,000 bribe from Edward L Doheny over the Elks Hill naval oil reserve lease.
Josiah Kirby, former head of the Cleveland Discount Company, was released today from the federal penitentiary at Atlanta for good behavior. He will swear a pauper's oath before U S Commissioner Ed S Griffith due to an inability to pay a 7000 dollar fine, then receive railroad transportation. Kirby was sentenced by Federal Judge John M Killits to seven and a half years for using the mails to defraud, beginning July 1926.

Prof. John L. Conrad head of DePauw University voice department resigns to join Oberlin College Ohio. Effective immediately he begins at Oberlin for the second semester and his DePauw classes will be redistributed. An Oberlin alumnus, he taught eleven years at Cornell College and did post graduate work in Berlin Paris and New York City. He is a tenor with extensive concert and oratorio experience.
The court annulled the bigamous marriage of Harry W. McCluskey and Rosella Lee McCluskey in Lorain. The couple wed after a long courtship but learned of his prior marriage and three children in Rochester. The annulment clears Lorain County records and ends the case.
Lawrence F. Wagner of Elyria announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for Lorain County sheriff ahead of the May primary. A Lorain native and Ohio Northern graduate, he runs a Elyria drug store 17 years and has 12 years as a deputy in the sheriff's department. He is married with four children and lives at 645 Lodi Street.
In Detroit on February 3 O V Chance in a nightshirt pursued a chicken coop intruder. He apprehended and held John Kovich and Joe Dombraski for police. Chance also contracted pneumonia due to the freezing weather.
