Vermilion mayor Eileen Bulan 71 will not seek a third term retiring after this year’s end. Filing day for the May primary saw three City Council members Monica Stark Fred Ostrander and Jim Forthofer plus Shawn Perry submit papers per the Lorain County Board of Elections. Top primary finishers will advance to the nonpartisan fall contest.
Avon Lake voters face a crowded field as nine individuals file for three at large City Council seats while three seek two seats on the Board of Municipal Utilities. Only incumbent City Council member Marty ODonnell is seeking re election among the at large contenders.
Lorain County Board of Elections reports two filings for Ward 2 City Council. Incumbent councilmen filed for Wards 3 and 4. By Wednesday no candidate had filed for Ward 1. Incumbent Alan Smith of Ward 2 will seek re election opposing Rocky Ratloff. Bill Lee Lake is noted among incumbents.
Lorain City Council members seek re election with several facing May 2 primaries. At large Democrats Mitch Fallis Joe Koziura and Mary Springowski are slated to run. Brian Gates faces a first time primary challenge in the 1st Ward. Venus Flores competes with two challengers for the 2nd Ward. Chris Nabakowski enters the 4th Ward race against Greg Argenti for November. Josh Thornberry shifts to Democrat. no primary.
Elyria's May 2 primary yields no contested races after Wednesday's filing deadline. Incumbents appear secure in the primary, with competition expected in the general election. nine council seats listed with incumbents named for various wards.
Six renewal issues appear on the May primary ballot per the Lorain County Board of Elections. Amherst voters decide on a 4.9 mill Amherst Schools levy and a 1 mill Fire Department levy. Sheffield residents vote on a 1.75 mill fire and EMS levy. Kipton residents consider a 2 mill permanent improvements levy. Sheffield Township voters choose on a 1 mill street lights levy and a 1 mill current expenses levy.
The Elyria board named Sean Amo head football coach with an expanded athletic coordinator role in shaping district athletics and the new multi million dollar athletic complex. Some residents questioned hiring practices and due diligence at a Wednesday meeting.
Downtown Elyria traffic delays expected from 8 a m until 5 p m today due to emergency sewer repair on West Avenue between and Fourth streets. Holly Lane will also close at West Avenue. Detours send southbound traffic via Third Street to Middle Avenue to Fourth Street, then west. northbound traffic uses Fourth Street to Middle Avenue to Second Street.
Google marks Black History Month with a doodle highlighting Edmonia Lewis, a former Oberlin College student from 1859. Artist Sophia Diao chose Lewis after researching her life and legacy, noting Lewis faced accusations of poisoning two white women.
