Forecasts for heavier snow fell short Tuesday, easing area travel and prompting Lorain County schools to cancel classes. Meteorologist Mark Adams of the Cleveland National Weather Service says the storm drifted north or west, bringing less snow and freezing rain instead.
Elyria Schools Superintendent Paul Rigda cancels classes for Wednesday after sub zero temperatures and an ice storm. He notes forecasts show the district has exhausted permissible calamity days.
Lorain Municipal Court opens at 1 p.m. today due to weather delays. Chronicle updates list school closings and calamity day makeup options through late spring, with dates including end of year and week of June 6. Avon Firelands Midview Vermilion Wellington districts unavailable Tuesday.
A city snow plow cleared Finwood Estate on Abbe Road, prompting complaints from residents. Assistant Safety Service Director Jim Hutchson said the driver was unfamiliar with Elyria’s routes and began on the north side, thinking all streets were included. He was instructed not to repeat the action.
Eaton Township trustees selected Jason Brooks, a two year officer, over acting Fire Chief Bob Resar who has 22 years on the force. Firefighters voiced anger with a veteran member calling the decision dismaying as trustees defended the choice and referenced job description concerns.
Lorain Mayor Tony Krasienko proclaimed Super Bowl Sunday as Matt Wilhelm Day honoring Packers linebacker Matt Wilhelm. The event also plans renaming Broadway in his honor. Wilhelm, born in Oberlin, has Lorain ties through his parents Roger and Ruth Wilhelm and property in Harbor Walk.
Elyria Lorain County Jail officials disciplined 13 inmates for violating rules during a Saturday night fight in a maximum security wing. Deputies may press criminal charges. 11 inmates were found guilty of fighting or disruption and ordered held in isolation 30 to 60 days. Anthony Bevne received medical care. Coats treated for a bloody nose. no injuries to officers. Guards quelled the disturbance in about six minutes with 42 inmates involved.
