Pope elevates 18 to cardinal in Rome ceremony
Pope John Paul II elevated 18 men to cardinal including Archibishop Joseph Bernardin of Chicago and Archibishop Lustiger of Paris. The consistory opened with a private ceremony in the Apostolic Palace then moved to the Paul VI Hall where 10,000 watched as each new cardinal received his red skullcap and biretta. A Turkish suspect, Mustafa Savak, was arrested in Milan over an alleged plot to kill the pope during a May visit, amid questions about links to the 1981 Agca shooting.
