Three Big Steel Firms Report 1962 Earnings Drop
New York reports three of the nation’s four largest steel companies posted earnings declines for 1962 amid Kennedy era price pressures. Bethlehem Steel and Jones & Laughlin showed multi year lows, while U S Steel had the longest drop in a decade. Republic Steel had yet to report. Bethlehem’s 1962 earnings were 1.80 a share on 2.07 billion in sales, with fourth quarter down from the prior period. J and L posted 1952 profits of 3.92 cents a share with a 1961-62 swing. Both firms maintained quarterly dividends prospects amid cooling demand and price restraint.
