Unsettled conditions prompt Lorain County commissioners to reject this year’s real estate reappraisal. In Washington Woodrow Wilson lies near death, with doctors hopeful yet cautious as crowds gather outside his home and a nurse tends to his bedside.
In TA Tennessee near Sparta and Cockerille, deputies pursued moonshiners through the hills. A deputy sheriff, W. C. Welch of Sparta, was killed in a gunfire exchange. Two alleged moonshiners were killed and fled into the mountains.
The United States Railroad Labor Board announced wage rises for workers on five southeastern railways. Affected roles include storers, freight handlers, coopers, truckers, and laborers on the Chesapeake and Ohio line, three cents per hour, with Newport News Virginia cited as the sole location.
The case of Joseph Tracy against Fred Kline in Lorain closed yesterday afternoon with the jury returning a verdict for Tracy. Judgment was entered for $700 with interest, bringing the total to over $800.
Miriam Atkinson a six year old girl was found starved to death in a well at the Atkinson home in Beckley West Virginia. Authorities led by Dr C Sutherland announced an autopsy showed extreme malnutrition. Mrs Atkinson confessed placing the body in the well after the child died at table. Prosecution considers murder if facts warrant.
Emory Connell known as Diamond Joe Sullivan and Eulos Sullivan, both sentenced to death for murder, and their companion kidnap the warden and flee the Arkansas state penitentiary in a high powered car. Police pursue as posses race to recapture the men who are linked to multiple shootings and warrant calls across several states.
Elyria Post No. 12 of The American Legion received a check from Col. William Cooper Procter of Cincinnati as Trustee of The 88th Division Trust Fund. The fund, established by Ohio citizens, supports Ohio servicemen and was court settled to The American Legion for World War Veterans. The Ohio Legion posts are to receive funds pro rated by state memberships. Elyria Post 12, with over 200 paid members by July 1, has filed its claim awaiting disbursement for Post headquarters furnishings.
Burglars robbed the home of Charlotte Moore Smith on Oberlin road stealing 7 dollars from Mrs. Smith and 55 dollars from a boarder. A note reading Thank You was left on a table. Entry was made via a tent door.
Akron police believe a gasoline explosion may have started a blaze in a kitchen stove. Mrs Arthur Smith, 22, and her children Minnie May 3 Kathleen 2 and a 9 month old boy were burned beyond recognition. Boarder Albert Raines escaped by leaping from a second story window after being badly burned. The husband worked at a rubber factory.
Washington feb 1 after Edward Doheny testified he employed Thomas W Gregory the White House announced Gregory would be withdrawn from the naval oil lease investigation. Congress moved to cancel leases held by Doheny and Sinclair authorizing legal action to return lands to the government amid broader probe into corruption.
The Lorain common pleas court reversed Curtis Jameson’s alcohol possession conviction after evidence suggested another tenant and landlord may have planted liquor. Judge Webber deemed the arrest likely erroneous and noted Jameson’s good reputation as a drinking man. Pneumonia claimed Monsignor William D. Hicey, 7, vicar general of Cincinnati, at St Mary’s Convent.
In Chicago and suburbs four train wrecks caused over thirty injuries as thick fog disrupted traffic. Elevated trains collided injuring twenty five seriously, two line Central suburban trains collided wounding over ten, another crash hurt one, and two more elevated train crashes shook a hundred and fifty people as power was cut citywide for an hour.
The former president, visibly aged, sat in a large armchair by the fireplace as visitors extended their greetings. He spoke little, appearing tired yet content with the warmth of the reception.
