Amherst volunteers reported two false alarms over the weekend sending out emergency units each time. The first call came at 7 50 am Saturday claiming a car fire at the B Bar B Trailer Court but proved unfounded. A second Sunday 1 am call reported a fire at 138 Jorde Ave again found to be false.
Jerome Lewine, 77, senior partner in the Wall Street firm H. Hentz & Co. and former president of the Commodity Exchange, died Saturday at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City.
Lorain Auditor Joseph Mitock told council the county has not sent full August and October tax settlements due to the courthouse renovation. He said many towns face cash shortages. Lorain remains solvent with about 200000 in reserve, though the welfare fund may end in the red. County Auditor Ayres promised a check soon as possible while council approves 1963 tax millage and city appointments.
Police report a break-in at Welch Hardware on Broadway with a 42 inch hole in a window and a burglary at B F Goodrich Store with a smashed garage door window. Thieves took four portable air telephones and four stereo phonographs.
Police said Flores sped in an eastbound Flores auto on East 28th Street trying to outrun a patrol cruiser. Flores was captured near Kqaq East 28th Street with a crying baby present on the front seat. Police clocked the vehicle at 42 mph in a restricted zone.
Lorain police arrested three drivers yesterday for driving while under the influence. George James Coens, 47, was found slumped at West 11th Street and Reid Avenue after his car moved when ignition was on. An 18 year old Wellington wife, Joann Gloria Smith, was cited for reckless operation after a late afternoon crash near West 21st Street. Deputy reports say Michael Joe Sutmaier, 12, was treated for injuries after his vehicle collided with a parked car. Antonio Flores, East 29th Street, was cited for DUI as his car rammed into the west end of the Wellington Creek bridge and caused extensive damage to guardrails and a pole along Rt. 20.
