Three branch Whitney Bank and Trust Company employees a customer cashier and a watchman were killed in New Orleans when they resisted a trio of gunmen attempting a bank robbery. The incident occurred December 31 with three robbers also involved.
Grand jurors will convene Tuesday January 13 to consider three manslaughter three robbery and two shooting charges plus assaults batters non support cutting defrauding and lesser counts. Eighteen transcripts from lower courts await action with more likely before assembly.
Washington report says rail executives expect completion of a plan to consolidate 50 eastern lines into four trunk systems the New York Central, Baltimore and Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Chesapeake and Ohio. President Hoover supports the project despite congressional and labor opposition seen as the main obstacle. A draft was to be drawn in New York and signed by leaders Crowley, Willard, Atterbury, and Bennet.
Paris bulletin reports Marshal Joffre's condition stationary with a brief lapse of consciousness this morning. He remains resting calmly though nourishment is difficult. Despite danger he has shown rallies, including a rapid milk intake at night.
Treasurer N D Backuss announced tax collection would begin Saturday at eight county locations. An estimated 3,000,000 dollars in taxes may be collected before January 20 to avoid a 10 percent penalty. About 35,000 tax bills were mailed. Residents may pay at Elyria Courthouse or banks in Wellington Grafton Ripton La Grange Amherst and Lorain. Robbery insurance for the treasurer was raised to 50,000 for 30 days starting Friday.
Albert Einstein arrived in San Diego on December 31 en route to Pasadena for three months of study and discussion with American scientists. The famous physicist, noted for his German origin, was met by a robust reception comparable to his earlier New York welcome aboard the Bergenline.
A 4,292 ton Greek steamer Theodorus Bulgaris was sinking in the Bay of Biscay. Ushant radio stations intercepted a message requesting a tug and noting that the crew was being saved. The vessel's position was 45.48 N, 7.30 W, about 200 miles off the French coast.

Judges in the Chronicle Telegram awarded cash prizes for the Yuletide Illumination Contest. First prize went to Dr. M. F. Elliot for 25 dollars, second to Mrs. C. F. Harriet B. Dake longtime Elyria resident died at 600 West Avenue December 31 1930. She was born while her father Sheriff of Lorain County served and lived in Elyria all her life. A 1872 Elyria High School graduate, she married James A. Dake in 1875 and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1925. She belonged to several clubs and attended First Congregational Church for over fifty years. She is survived by her sister Mrs P H Kaiser Clinton NY and two daughters.
George Sutila Sr. and his son filed suits in common pleas against City Produce Commission Co of Lorain for a total 45 000 in damages. Sr. seeks 25 000 for injuries from a September 14 1928 crash on East 28th Street when his car hit a truck claimed to be unlit. George Jr. seeks 15 000 as a passenger in his father’s car. The father also sues for 5 000 for his son's injuries.
The notice lists Mrs G H Brownell of 720 Park Avenue and Mrs C D Gull of 449 Earl Court as survivors along with two grandchildren Mrs W D Humphrey of Findlay Ohio and Duke Gull of Elyria. The funeral is Friday at 2 30 P M at Taylor Funeral Home with Rev W M Auld officiating and burial in Ridgelawn Cemetery. Flowers requested to be omitted.
Deputy Auditor Phinney releases Lorain County figures showing total utilities and personal tax valuation at 84.6 million dollars, up 2.59 million from last year. Public utilities 42.09 million, taxable personal and corporate property 41.25 million, Elyria personal property 13.21 million, Lorain city 16.33 million, stock and bond values 2.99 million, and cash values 2.93 million. Personal tax intake stands at 18.87 million, up about 270 thousand. Non taxable securities 53,045. Rural cattle and dairying slip in value despite more head. Motor vehicle tax value 4.98 million, Elyria motor value 1.73 million, Lorain city lake value 1.72 million. Household goods total 33.19 million, down about 150 thousand. Elyria household goods 0.90 million, Lorain 1.06 million. Farm tools 0.57 million, manufacturing machinery 4.99 million, pianos 0.57 million. Livestock includes 6,106 horses, 9,660 sheep, 3,136 hogs, and 160,981 poultry.
The Kiwanis club held its final meeting of 1930 at the Hotel Newell. Members performed songs as Ray Renz, newly elected president, and Howard Butler, retiring president, spoke brief thanks and offered best wishes to the incoming leader.

The majority of Elyrians plan a quiet New Year with little fanfare while some host midnight dinners watch parties and last-respect rituals. Whistles will blow bells ring as Father Time marks 12 o clock and the calendar turns to 1931 with hopes for a happy and prosperous year.
Deputy sheriff James Rundle, 63, who lost a leg in the Ridgeville crash, and 17 year old Wanda Budny of Fairlawn Avenue were listed in slight but improving condition, both still critical. Tomasceski, driver of the car that pinned Rundle, was found guilty of reckless driving and fined $25 plus costs. Sheriff Adams filed charges in the incident.
Thirty six foreign born residents of Elyria and vicinity will receive United States citizenship certificates next Tuesday night at the First Congregational Church under the Settlement Association. Nine nations are represented with the British Isles holding nine members. Howard Butler will give the principal address and Mayor James A. Hewitt will give the welcome. Max Horvitz responds to the welcome. The roll is called by Doris Todd with R G C Maston presiding. The musical program includes a piano solo by Mrs Elsie Wasserman and a song by Alex Boksa.
A State exam report finds the City of Elyria owes 1069.70 to the county treasury from Crabbe Act fines misdeposited after a law change. The city kept half for decades under old rules. the new law directs all fines to the state or county. Officials say fines were not collected, not suspended.
