Safe ice rules and bait tips for northern Ohio anglers
The deep freeze brings ice fishing fever but warns caution. Safe ice is limited to inland ponds, with Lake Erie still unsafe. Stay off ice under two inches. two inches supports one person, four inches groups, seven to eight inches needed for vehicles. Clear blue ice matters. slushy or soft ice requires more thickness. Minnows, waxworms, mousses and mealworms are effective baits. walleye and perch fishing improves once Lake Erie freezes over, especially Sugar Rock and Bass Islands areas with guided access.
