Windmills eyed on Block Island for energy aid
Block Island Rhode Island seeks wind power to cut oil costs amid shortages. By 1976 about 60 percent of the island's power may come from five or six 100 foot windmills costing around $250,000 with installation starting in 1975. Wind, a constant, averages 17 mph near the ground and peaks at 90 mph. oil costs may rise from 15 to 30 cents a gallon, making wind energy more favorable. Local residents have reduced oil use during Daylight Saving Time, aided by mild weather. Narragansett Electric Co cautions that windmills are unlikely to be adopted statewide due to construction and cabling challenges.
