A fire at Clarksfield Community Hall caused major damage to the south side and roof after starting above a false ceiling. The blaze came from a defective chimney and smoke and water heavily damaged the interior. The loss is only partially insured and repairs were underway.
Catherine McKee of Selec tive Service Board No 72 releases a status report on 38 men tested for pre induction medicals on December 18. Nineteen local registrants include nine acceptable and eight rejected with two undetermined. Twelve transfers show six acceptable and one undetermined and one rejected.
Fair tonight with temperatures near last night low around 25. Tuesday stays partly cloudy with similar daytime temperatures as today.

A four day Christmas holiday period produced a record high in traffic fatalities with at least 062 deaths, seven more than the prior peak. Fires, plane crashes, and other mishaps pushed overall accidental deaths to 736, while Texas recorded 57 highway deaths and Hawley saw a major collision killing three.
Trustees report the McGee Fund balance as of December 20 totals 18027.89 with 9805.81 from Henrietta collection and 8198.58 from Mary Lee Tucker Fund and 23.50 from miscellaneous sources. President-elect Eisenhower will lunch with Sen Robert A Taft and five Senate leaders in a second cooperation session. Hagerty said the agenda includes possible discussion of changing Senate rules to ban the filibuster, with participants including Bridges Saltonstall Millikan and Young.
Clerk H FE Agate announced the grand jury will convene January 14 to review 22 pending cases and any new matters arising. Among them is a first degree manslaughter charge against Cora Lee Watty of Lorain for killing her ex husband William Buddy Flanders when he tried to enter her apartment on November 29. Other cases include non-support embezzlement and criminal assault.
George Henry Frank aged 54 longtime Amherst News and Times publisher died at 11 p m Saturday after a recent heart attack. He led the Amherst paper for 11 years and previously published the Grafton paper for five years before selling printers supplies. He belonged to La Grange Lodge 393 F and A M the Amherst Eagles Lodge and attended the First Evangelical United Brethren Church in Amherst.

Newark reports Jersey City Mayor John V. Kenny declines to testify at the New Jersey Law Enforcement Council inquiry into waterfront crime after the council denies right of counsel. Kenny's refusal follows questions on pier rackets and criminal activity along the Jersey docks.
Federal Judge John Knight upheld the Taft-Hartley national emergency provision and granted the government an 80 day injunction against the CIO United Steel Workers strike at the American Locomotive Dunkirk plant in New York.
Governor Frank Lausche and Col. George Mingle pledged full resources to reduce Ohio New Year traffic deaths after a Christmas holiday toll of at least 46 fatalities. They cited excessive speed and drunken driving as primary causes, with 38 traffic deaths and 8 non traffic fatalities.
Gov. Lausche to sign proclamation launching Ohio’s 150th birthday observance. Official sesquicentennial celebration begins March 1 with 1953 events, including an exhibit in the Library of Congress on January 8 featuring Dean Carl F. Wittke and Sen. Robert A. Taft presiding, then moving to the Ohio State Museum on April 8.

South Korea's President Syngman Rhee will visit Gen. Mark W. Clark in Tokyo for a social, unofficial meeting next week. Japanese press express misgivings, noting Rhee's anti Japanese stance and past calls to fire on any Japanese forces. Mainichi urges Rhee to help improve postwar relations with Japan.
At 12 40 am Sunday two youths were hospitalized after a car driven by 17 year old David Wayne Nash of Wellington struck a dirt bank on Lincoln Road north of Kipton. Nash said he was blinded by dust from a preceding car. Passenger Geraldine Fleming 16 of Birmingham suffered severe facial and scalp lacerations. Nash was treated and released with facial and leg injuries.

South Korean infantry repelled a five hour ground assault by two Chinese platoons near Rocky Point on Sniper Ridge. The battle ended with 42 Chinese dead and wounded on the field while a heavy artillery barrage struck east of Bunker Hill. Okinawa based U.S. Air Forces bombed a North Korea air field near Pyongyang with 12,000 pounds of bombs, targeting a purported Communist airstrip.
Captain Burton Johnson announces Salvation Army Christmas effort using the Ton of Money fund. Baskets with toys and treats fed 78 families and county jail residents received candy. About 500 new toys plus gifts were donated. Funds total $2023.52 with more expected.
A car driven by James B. Clem 21 of Wellington was sideswiped on Highway 10 near Ripton at 1 15 am Sunday by a hit skip youth from Huron County who was apprehended and turned over to juvenile authorities. His case is set for Wednesday morning.
