New Year House Calls Fade From Elyria Traditions

Elyria’s old New Year custom of hand delivering visits and punch bowls has vanished as the city grew and social circles narrowed. Forty years ago Elyria families such as the Elys Gates Beshes Starrs Favons DeWitts Vincent Baldwin Shapman Bornton Hill Washburn Boyd Penfield Pomeroy Metcal Lawades Johnston Nelson Gay Flower Fisher and others hosted guests with lunches as sleighing crowds roamed the streets in celebration. The practice faded amid divided society and fewer neighbors knowing one another, ending a New England rooted rite of January greetings.
