James Knox of Long Beach California sobs after a head on collision that killed Scott Sanders 24 his wife Mary Jane 20 and their 13 month old son Scott Jr. Denise Scott 5 survived. Knox is charged with manslaughter and felony drunk driving.
The Chronicle Telegram launches a new consumer affairs column by Arthur E Rowse. Titled Consumer Contact it will report directly to readers on laws safety measures and manufacturing practices affecting purchases. The column appears daily for a week starting Monday and then Mondays and Fridays thereafter.
US forces engaged a major clash near Loc Ninh and the Cambodian border, using jets, helicopters, tanks, and armored units. Commanders cited at least 72 enemy deaths and 40 bunkers destroyed while reporting ongoing combat and unspecified American casualties. Other light activity occurred across South Vietnam after the Viet Cong cease fire.

President Nixon and budget aides debated the 12 month outlook starting July 1 as a record budget near 200 billion and a 2.5 billion revenue shortfall from the tax bill. He signaled support for the reform while warning Congress on further revenue losses and planned to deliver the State of the Union January 22.
In Messina Sicily a five year old boy named Vog Manea played with a metal ball later identified as a 1940 hand grenade. His mother confiscated it and experts later detonated it finding it in perfect working order.
The Nixon administration announced a 32 percent increase in monthly Medicare premiums from 4 to 5.30 dollars effective July 1 1970 to maintain solvency. The higher rate includes 64 cents for current operation and 66 cents for anticipated costs, drawing criticism from the American Patients Association.
In Strongsville Ohio four teenagers aged 17 died in a two car collision near the Rt 42 and Whitney Road intersection. The dead are James Eberhart Wadsworth Floyd Bridenthal Chippewa Lake Joseph Szenkanyi Medina and Michael Emrick Chippewa Lake. Jim Fisher 18 of Wadsworth was listed as in fair condition. The other driver Kerry Schwenk 20 Parina was released after questioning. police could not determine which car had the right of way or who was driving the teens' vehicle.
Thousands gathered at Los Angeles International Airport to glimpse Pan Am’s new Boeing 747 during tours and two press flights. Police appealed for alternative routes as cars stretched for miles. The jet will start regular California to Hawaii service in February.
London hospitals went on emergency status as influenza cases flooded the system. Only the most urgent non flu cases will be admitted in about 200 area hospitals.
